Enhancing Farm Security and Management in Namibia

Sigmotec, an IoT company founded by experts in civil, mechanical, and software engineering, focuses on addressing the specific needs of Namibian farmers. Artemis Alert is a technology company specializing in security systems. Artemis Alert has developed a LoRaWAN-based intruder detection device that integrates seamlessly with existing farm management systems.

Poaching, equipment theft, and livestock theft present significant challenges to farmers in Namibia. The vast size of the farms, often exceeding 10,000 hectares, makes regular patrolling difficult and resource-intensive. With limited or no cell phone coverage in these remote areas, farmers lack the real-time monitoring capabilities necessary to respond quickly to threats. Farmers have reported significant losses, not only from stolen equipment like solar pumps but also from stock theft, particularly cattle. This negatively impacts their productivity and profitability. Furthermore, the additional labor and fuel costs required to monitor large properties manually create an ongoing burden. A more effective solution was required—one that could provide continuous monitoring and timely alerts without relying on traditional infrastructure.

The Artemis Alert intruder detection device is based on LoRaWAN technology, providing a reliable, long-range communication method suited for large, remote farms. Sigmotec has partnered with Artemis Alert as the project system integrator, offering their expertise in installing and managing the necessary LoRaWAN gateways. During the first test phase, Sigmotec installed an Outdoor LoRaWAN Gateway RAK7240 on Artemis's test farm. This gateway supports secure and reliable communication between the intruder detection devices and the farm management system. Sigmotec also utilized the RAK Field Tester to optimize network coverage, ensuring that the devices could reliably transmit alarm signals from various points across the farm. One of the key advantages of using a LoRaWAN-based intruder detection system is its ability to expand beyond just security. Farmers can easily integrate additional LoRaWAN-based sensors into the same network, including water monitoring sensors, pump and valve controllers, and other IoT solutions. This allows the farmer not only to protect the farm from intrusions but also to manage vital farm operations, such as water management or irrigation control, from the same platform.

The test phase has demonstrated promising results. With real-time alarms, the farmers are now able to monitor their properties more effectively, reducing the risk of poaching, equipment theft, and stock theft. The system's early warning capability allows farmers to respond quickly to intrusions, potentially preventing significant losses, whether from stolen equipment or missing cattle. In addition to providing security, the system has reduced the need for frequent patrols, saving labor and fuel costs. Moreover, the LoRaWAN-based network offers flexibility for future expansion, enabling farmers to easily integrate additional sensors that can help with other critical operations, such as monitoring water levels, controlling pumps, and managing valves. This comprehensive solution delivers not only enhanced security but also improved overall farm management. The collaboration between Sigmotec and Artemis has resulted in a scalable and effective solution that addresses one of the most pressing issues for Namibian farmers: security. As the project moves forward, Sigmotec and Artemis will continue to refine the system based on the feedback from the test farm and expand its availability to other farmers, offering them a more secure and efficient future.
