Company profile

Sigmotec, an innovative IoT company founded by experts in civil, mechanical, and software engineering, focuses on addressing the specific needs of Namibian farmers. With experience in both technology and livestock farming, the team brings a deep understanding of local challenges. After thorough testing of LoRaWAN technology, Sigmotec officially launched its services in June 2023, offering tailored solutions to improve farm management.

Problem Statement

Given the vast size of Namibian farms—ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 hectares—managing water resources efficiently posed a significant challenge. Cell phone coverage in these remote areas was either extremely limited or non-existent, making manual waterpoint checks time-consuming and costly in fuel and labor.

Location

Africa

Solution

The farm implemented a robust IoT-based water monitoring system, with 10 water level sensors installed throughout the property. The system is anchored by the IP65 Outdoor Gateway for LoRaWAN RAK7240, known for its ability to support reliable communication across vast outdoor areas. The gateway connects a network of sensors, which continuously transmit water level data.

Following the incidents of baboon-related damage, Sigmotec upgraded the protective enclosures, and the gateway was placed on a square pole to enhance the durability and lifespan of the system.

Outcome

The new water management system has delivered substantial improvements for the farmers. With real-time monitoring via customized dashboards, the water supply is now fully secure, ensuring that the cattle have uninterrupted access to water. This has improved the animals' well-being and freed up the farmer's time to focus on other important farm operations. The daily need to manually check the 10 water reservoirs on the expansive 10,000-hectare property has been entirely eliminated, resulting in significant labor and fuel savings.
