Optimizing Water Management in Namibia's Eco-Friendly Lodges with RAKwireless

Sigmotec is a pioneering IoT company specializing in smart farming solutions. It was founded by experts with backgrounds in civil, mechanical, and software engineering to address the unique challenges faced by Namibian farmers. The founders, who are also actively involved in livestock farming, bring a wealth of expertise to the industry. Sigmotec officially launched in June 2023 after extensive testing of LoRaWAN® technology.

The lodge group is based in Namibia, one of the world's water-scarce countries. Major constraints in the effective management of the water supply at the lodges are posed by the country's arid climate. Fresh water is so scarce that it must be used extremely sparingly, while greywater is recycled to avoid wastage and ensure sustainability. Previous systems for water resource management were inefficient in a way that made monitoring the level, usage, and recycling of water quite hard. This inefficiency was not only a threat to the lodge's commitment to eco-friendly practices but also increased operational costs due to possible water shortages. The challenge was how to put in place a solution that could provide real-time, accurate data on water usage and recycling, with which the lodges can optimize their water resources, ensuring its sustainability in business and reputation as leaders in eco-tourism.

To tackle the water management challenges, the lodge group deployed a sophisticated IoT solution. At the core of this system is the WisGate Edge Prime Outdoor LoRaWAN Gateway RAK7240. It was chosen for its reliable, long-range communication capabilities in outdoor environments. The gateway connects a network of third-party water level and meter sensors that monitor freshwater supplies, track usage, and oversee greywater recycling. Data collected by the sensors is transmitted to the cloud, where it is visualized through a customizable platform. The lodge group has tailored the platform's dashboards with their own scripts, allowing for a bespoke approach to monitoring and managing water resources. These custom dashboards provide real-time insights, enabling the lodge management to make informed decisions, optimize water use, and enhance their sustainability efforts. This solution not only ensures that water resources are managed efficiently but also supports the lodge's broader goal of maintaining eco-friendly operations across its properties.

The deployment of this advanced water management system has yielded significant benefits for the lodge group.
